Traditional Deck Design Ideas

This unique screened porch located in Darnestown, Maryland provides its hard-working homeowner with an abundance of outdoor space. Situated on a vast wooded lot, the views are absolutely stunning. The elevated sun deck wraps around the complete rear facade the home and features unique cut-outs and a sizable screen room. To successfully preserve the lot's lively green view, a delicate SCREENEZE screening system was used in the screened room in conjunction with WOLF vinyl railings and Deckorators Classic Balusters. The 3/4" round balusters, which are also found around the deck's organic perimeter, blend in seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. AZEK low-maintenance PVC decking serves as the basis of both the deck and the top cop on the handrail system. Multiple sliding doors give access to the screened-in porch and deck, and all of the materials used in the build are low-maintenance.

They were competitors on the first ever series of The Block and winners of The Block All Stars, now Phil and Amity have completed their own home. Designed by Amity and Peter East and decorated by Amity herself, this family home was built by Scott Salisbury Homes and reflects the couple's love of Hamptons, Queenslander and Edwardian style weatherboard houses. Located in Tranmere, South Australia, this home is clad with Scyon Linea (painted in Wattyl Wicker White) which creates a heritage aesthetic without the high maintenance of timber weatherboards. The wrap around verandah further speaks to a classic Australian look. Complete with French doors that create an opening between the front rooms and the verandah, Phil and Amity’s new home is a modern interpretation of the Hampton’s style with a quintessential Australian twist. Challenges with your backyard space? Yeah, that's no problem for us. In this space, the deck could not be attached to the house because of the way this turn-of-the-century home was built. The house is 100 years old and the basement door is right in the middle of the back of the house, preventing an attached deck. Another big challenge on this space was that the lot sloped up the hill and away from the house. So what did we do? We excavated and put in retaining walls and build it into the side of the hill, while maintaining integrity of the backyard space and driveway. The homeowners wanted their outdoor space on the same level as the play area with swingset so that they could watch the kids while they relax. Nailed it!
