If you mean a Private Building Inspector, then it is up to you and how confident you are with your contracting building company. The private building inspector will inspect your home at different stages of the build. Slab laid, when walls reach roof height, when roof is installed, when plumbing and electrical is installed and at final completion. If your building company is doing there job correctly then I would only get a building inspector to walk through on your final inspection. But if you feel there are problems with the build, then have a building inspector employed on a regular interval for the different stages of completion. Regarding cost, contact companies for quotes of their hourly rates.

You can ask the builder to use your inspector as the certifier instead of theirs to save money. Or have a second one.

Yes def worth it. A house is a big $ investment and the majority of work is in the parts you can’t see and don’t have the expertise to assess. Def at slab stage and before and after they close up the walls. Their final report at handover will help your negotiations with the builder to have all the defects fixed upon completion.

Agree with bigreader. My stepson had a house built last year in WA and as a gift I paid for the building inspection. The builder did a pretty good job but there were some corners cut by the tradies which would have been very difficult to pick up and rectify without the inspection report. I equate it to you wouldnt buy a car without having an inspection so why would you buy a house without one! As a percentage of the house cost its really quite a small outlay.
