940sf interior and exterior remodel of the rear unit of a duplex. By reorganizing on-site parking and re-positioning openings a greater sense of privacy was created for both units. In addition it provided a new entryway for the rear unit. A modified first floor layout improves natural daylight and connections to new outdoor patios. (c) Eric Staudenmaier

This house is discreetly tucked into its wooded site in the Mad River Valley near the Sugarbush Resort in Vermont. The soaring roof lines complement the slope of the land and open up views though large windows to a meadow planted with native wildflowers. The house was built with natural materials of cedar shingles, fir beams and native stone walls. These materials are complemented with innovative touches including concrete floors, composite exterior wall panels and exposed steel beams. The home is passively heated by the sun, aided by triple pane windows and super-insulated walls. Photo by: Nat Rea Photography

This Jersey Shore beach home makeover led to a space that puts as much emphasis on function as it does design. The kitchen boasts contemporary, sleek cabinetry and stainless steel appliances, with a sea glass backsplash to bring back the beachy feel this family loves. A glass top table in the dining room is the perfect way to show off its traditional legs given new life with blue high-gloss paint, while a bubble-shaped chandelier hangs overhead. The living room continues the open, airy theme with white couches, a traditional fireplace mantel given the same blue-paint treatment, and some wood and leather accents to warm it all up. The picture frame air conditioner brings in discreet functionality. Polished concrete floors are easy to clean during family gatherings, while the large wall of glass doors open up to a backyard perfect for entertaining, complete with an outdoor kitchen, pizza oven, and bocce court.

Overview Loft addition, ground floor extension and remodelling. The Brief To enhance and extend the family home with a hi-spec interior and unique design throughout. Our Solution We decided to create a crisp space fitting in a wonderful kitchen by Roundhouse and focus on several key design features to realise an award-worthy scheme. This project was longlisted for the New London Architecture Awards for 2017 and was part of an exhibition at The Building Centre on Store Street, London. As is often the case we have planning considerations that drove the shape and setting out, we maximised the space added, specifically exhibited some of the otherwise hidden structure and added in acres of neat, concealed storage from front to back. The clients’ taste and sense of modern style have led to an amazing interior with concrete topped kitchen, bespoke storage, a central fireplace and a flexible kitchen/dining/snug area off the courtyard garden. We are so proud of this scheme.

A radical remodel of a modest beach bungalow originally built in 1913 and relocated in 1920 to its current location, blocks from the ocean. The exterior of the Bay Street Residence remains true to form, preserving its inherent street presence. The interior has been fully renovated to create a streamline connection between each interior space and the rear yard. A 2-story rear addition provides a master suite and deck above while simultaneously creating a unique space below that serves as a terraced indoor dining and living area open to the outdoors. This 2,300-square-foot contemporary ranch is perched on a lake bluff preparing for take-off. The house is composed of three wing-like metal roofs, stucco walls, concrete floors, a two-story library, a screen porch and lots and lots of glass. The primary airfoil reflects the slope of the bluff and the single story extends the ground plane created by the pine-bow canopy. Translucency and spatial extension were the cornerstones of the design of this very open plan. george heinrich

Designed as gallery, studio, and residence for an artist, this house takes inspiration from the owner’s love of cubist art. The program includes an upper level studio with ample north light, access to outdoor decks to the north and south, which offer panoramic views of East Austin. A gallery is housed on the main floor. A cool, monochromatic palette and spare aesthetic defines interior and exterior, schewing, at the owner’s request, any warming elements to provide a neutral backdrop for her art collection. Thus, finishes were selected to recede as well as for their longevity and low life scycle costs. Stair rails are steel, floors are sealed concrete and the base trim clear aluminum. Where walls are not exposed CMU, they are painted white. By design, the fireplace provides a singular source of warmth, the gas flame emanating from a bed of crushed glass, surrounded on three sides by a polished concrete hearth.
