A contemporary roof terrace designed to be a place to entertain and relax. Planted with predominately evergreen plants to give year-round structure, texture and privacy. Powder-coated steel planters were made in differing shapes, heights and colours to give more interest, and reflect the light. Some planters were placed on wheeled bases so that they could be moved around for large parties! The planting was also wind tolerant with a flowing colour pallet of lilac and white. We installed an irrigation system to water the plants and shots of colour came from cushions (outdoor fabric) and ethnic floor cushions. High quality outdoor lighting gave the space atmosphere with additional hanging lanterns used with large candles.

Ornamental grasses and sedum thrive on this highly exposed site while softening the Cor-Ten steel structure. This design was featured in the January 2014 issue of Dwell magazine.

UES TOWNHOUSE ROOF GARDEN WITH CLASSIC STYLE

When designing this rooftop garden for a townhouse on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, we wanted to maintain the classic style featured throughout the residence. The planters are made of fiberstone, a blend of fiberglass and stone, and are filled with a lush mix of maiden grasses, hydrangea trees, boxwoods, creeping Jenny, caryopteris, and wisteria vines. The black metal furniture works perfectly with the existing black wrought-iron fence. When picking out the plants to go along the railing, we made sure to stick with low-profile plants that wouldn’t take up too much space or compete with the view.

The intoxicating scent of David Austin English roses explodes in June and continues through the summer at the retail stores and condominiums that occupy the historic ‘Prince on Newbury’ street building. A lucky passerby will leave with a fragrant bouquet in hand when Garden Mates is trimming the roses! Soft as clouds, endless summer hydrangeas line the walkways enticing shoppers to stay and browse the shops. On the rooftop deck, colorful potted annuals with envious, bold colors, mock the threatening skies and the Boston skyline.

This garden consists of garden planters above a parking garage next to a high rise condominium building with 195 residents. The building was designed by the famed architect Frank Gehry, and is situated in the Cross Keys development, which was created by the pioneering Rouse Company, who also created the famous town of Columbia, MD. I designed the plantings for four main planters and two smaller ones. And, every year I design and install annual displays in one bed and four pots. The plantings are pollinator friendly with flowering perennials and ornamental grasses. My dad had previously designed the plantings for this garden; most of which has been replaced. Decide which plants to use

The greenery you choose is critical to your look. For example, if you’re trying to create a tropical garden palm trees and bamboo are your go-to options. Other popular options are golden cane palm trees and fern for ground cover. From there you can add some colour with bright flowers like frangipani, hibiscus or bromeliads. All these are actually quite hardy plants, so once established, your tropical garden is actually quite easy to maintain. Use this structure and apply it to your style. Research which plants you need to set your base for a garden and go from there.

Add some decor

If the plants don’t quite do it for you yet, or if you want to add some extra wow-factor, consider adding some extra features. Even if you can’t accommodate a swimming pool, hot tub or pond, you could look at smaller water features. Simple rocks can also have a great effect, while statues and gnomes will add some extra character. Don’t forget to add some furniture so you have a nice place to sit and enjoy your garden!
